Francisca Carvalho

UNTITLED, 2005

The set of six paintings by Francisca Carvalho emerges from a work seeking out vernacular images that she regularly carries out and compiles as cuttings in scrapbooks. These are the cuttings that she later transfers to the canvas. These six canvases apparently have nothing in conmon, yet she brings them together in a work that is concentrated in the exploration of notions of background-figure (which has been omnipresent in the history of painting since its beginning), and in the theme of the body undergoing transformation.
