Presentation

On conclusion of this project, the next step was to provide our "new home" with an art collection that would not only enhance the prestige of our institution but also contribute to the development of the plastic arts in Portugal through the strict criteria applied to the selection of the works.

The idea thus arose of launching a Painting Prize, an idea that was supported from the outset by the illustrious members of the jury, of whom we would single out Vicente Todolí, director of the Tate Modern Gallery in London, the former director of the Serralves Foundation in Oporto, the sub-director of the IVAM in Valencia who travelled to Portugal expressly for the purpose; Julião Sarmento the internationally renowned Portuguese painter; Paulo Pimenta, the well known collector, founder member of the Serralves Museum and director of the Cupertino de Miranda Foundation; and João Pinto Ribeiro, chairman of the Board of Directors of the Palácio do Correio Velho auctioneers.

We trust that this book may contribute to celebrating and uncovering the talent of the young Portuguese artists who have been awarded prizes. Congratulations!
